  • About this course:
    Academic Writing is a fundamental skill for students to achieve academic success in writing research papers and grant proposals. In this practical course, lecturers of Chiba University, in cooperation with the ones from Institute of Education (IOE), University of London, will provide five day intensive lectures for Academic Writing. We also help international students of Chiba University to submit a grant proposal.

  • Overview:
    This course focuses on organising, structuring and critically evaluating academic texts. In particular it looks at functional structure of science articles and theses, and the importance of writing to the expectations of the genre. It also explores the practical application of this knowledge via critical reading and writing at doctoral level.
    Please note: These sessions are designed to be interactive, exploring our understanding of academic writing. They will entail participation in group discussions and class presentations.
  • Learning outcomes:
    By the end of this course, students should be able to:
    • Recognise the influence of audience and purpose on the structure and organisation of their academic writing
    • Apply consistent organisational structure across genres
    • Critically analyse an article in their discipline
  • Course plan:
    • Session 1: Using genre awareness to develop our academic writing
    • Session 2: Organising the content of our thesis according to the expectations of the genre
    • Session 3: Critically analysing a research article
