Conservation Genetics of Mangroves

2nd Exchange Program for Conservation Genetics of Mangroves †

The great value of mangrove ecosystem is today widely recognized, but mangrove forests are exploited very rapidly by human activities. Habitat degradation and fragmentation of mangrove forests are of global concerns, but we still do not know how genetic diversity of mangroves are influenced. The distribution range of mangrove species are generally very wide and over many different countries. To assess current genetic diversity of mangrove species, international cooperation is highly required. For this purpose, we established a research network for conservation genetics of mangrove in 2010, supported by Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) Programme promoted by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). Graduate School of Science, Chiba University hosted the exchange program. As a part of the exchange program, an International Workshop for Conservation Genetics of Mangroves will be held in Iriomote Island which will be co-organized with the Iriomote Station of the Tropical Biosphere Research Center, the University of the Ryukyus, and International Society for Mangrove Ecosystem (ISME).

In the year 2011, we will hold another exchange program: "An exchange program to strengthen the ASEAN young researcher network for conservation of genetic diversity of mangroves" which will be held in Japan from 16th to 31st October 2011. This is a sequel of the previous one. The 2011 program is again sponsored by JENESYS and JSPS. As a part of the exchange program, "2nd International Workshop for Conservation Genetics of Mangroves" will be held on 19th and 20th October in Okinawa Island, co-organized with the Tropical Biosphere Research Center, the University of the Ryukyus, and International Society for Mangrove Ecosystem (ISME).

The main purpose of the exchange program 2011 is to strengthen the previous network and produce outcomes. We will have (1) an international workshop on conservation genetics of mangroves, (2) opportunities to analyze data provided by our network members, and (3) meetings to work on collaborative research papers. Most of the current members of the network will be invited to Japan to strengthen the network.

Contents of the program †

• 1) Seminars on mangrove study, molecular ecology, and conservation genetics
• 2) Short field trip to Japanese mangrove forests and field work training
• 3) Practical training course for lab works and data analysis of molecular data, including marker development using Next Generation Sequencing data
• 4) Preliminary assessment of genetic variation of some mangrove species collected by participants from their country.
