Exchange Program for Conservation Genetics of Mangroves †
The great value of mangrove ecosystem is widely recognized, but mangrove forests are exploited quite rapidly by human activities. Habitat degradation and fragmentation of mangrove forests are global conceren for us, but we do not know how genetic diversity of mangroves are influenced, as the species distribution range of mangrove species are generally very wide and over many different countries. To assess current genetic diversity of mangrove forests, international cooperation is necessary.
In this exchange program, we will invite young ASEAN researchers who concerns conservation of genetic diversity of mangroves in Asia and will form a network of researchers that can act for future conservation of mangroves. This exchange program is supported by Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) Programme promoted by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).

Aim: †
The program is held in order to
- 1) Form a network of young researchers who are concerning conservation of
genetic diversity of mangroves in Asia.
- 2) Exchange and share ideas on conservation of mangroves among
participants from ASEAN countries.
- 3) Provide training courses of laboratory works and analytical methods
for molecular conservation of mangroves to participants.
About 10 young researchers are expected to be invited from ASEAN
countries in February 2010.
Venue †
- Department of Biology, Graduate School of Science, Chiba University
- Tentative: Iriomote Station of the Tropical Biosphere Research Center, the University of the Ryukyus
Contents of the program †
- 1) Seminars on mangrove study, molecular ecology, and conservation genetics
- 2) Short field trip to Japanese mangrove forests
- 3) Practical training course for labo works and data analyses of
molecular data, including
- 4) Preliminary assessment of genetic variation of some mangrove species
collected by participants from their country.
We expect to publish the result of the preliminary assessment together
as a main contribution of the exchange program.
Oversea Partner Institutions †
- Botanical Garden of Indonesia, Indonesia
- Department of Biological Science, National Singapore University, Singapore
- Faculty of Forestry, Putra Malaysia University, Maleysia
and other institutes of ASEAN countries and India and Australia.
(The list will be updated soon.)
Invited Researchers †
All invited researchers are expected
- (1) to have citizenship of ASEAN countries.
- (2) to have received a doctorate degree within six years from Feb. 2010,
or be currently enrolled in a master’s or doctoral course.
- (3) to be affiliated with or enrolled in an institution in ASEAN countries.
- (4) to be currently working or willing to work for conservation genetics
of mangroves
- (5) to have experiences or knowledge of molecular systematic study.
Invited researchers should be recommended by an Oversea Partner Institution to Chiba University for this project.
